The Anglican presence in The Gambia dates back to 1855, when missionaries of the West Indian Church arrived to establish the first Anglican mission. The laying of the foundation stone of St. Mary’s Church in 1900 marked a historic milestone, and its consecration in 1901 established what is today the Cathedral Church of the Diocese.

The Diocese of Gambia and Guinea was formally inaugurated in 1935, serving a vast missionary territory. Today, the Anglican Diocese of Gambia covers The Gambia, Senegal, and the Cape Verde Islands, standing as one of the dioceses of the Church of the Province of West Africa
